Brow Gill Beck

North of Horton in Ribbesdale is a small stream called Brow Gill beck. Not a very wide one, but it has several small but delightful falls that cascade down it for over half a kilometre.

If you drive north from Settle, go through the village but as you turn left after crossing the first hump backed bridge, turn immediately to the right, don't cross the second bridge. 

Follow this small lane approx 3 miles until you reach the farm at High Birkwith.

There is room to park here as long as you don't block access to the Farm or the cottages.

Keep following the lane, through the gate and head up the hill, then take the left hand track. After approx 1km (15 mins walk) you will cross the stream as it drops underneath through a cave. You have the choice of following up or down stream.

Not for the faint-hearted! This fall is only approx 2m in height and it involves a walk of over 2km to reach it, although most of it is down narrow lanes. 

Parking near the church is tight so it might be better to park at the near-by Boar's Head Pub just over the road off the busy A65 between Skipton & Settle. 

Pass through the church yard and follow the lane until you come to the final farm. Turn left through a gate and cross a small dry stone bridge crossing Newton Beck. 

Walk uphill into the gill & where the path splits, take the left fork. 

The waterfall takes its name from the rock at the side comprised of layered gritstone separated by bands of shale.

The waterfall itself has been dammed at the top to provide water to the farm buildings.

 Turn into Stainforth off the B6479 (Settle to Horton in Ribblesdale Road) ,but don't park in the car park (unless you fancy a bit more of a walk). Instead proceed past the car park and turn left at the top of the road. Continue through the village and drive up Goat Lane for approx 700m until you see a gate set at an angle to the road. There is room to park 3 cars here. Go through the gate and down the lane, the Land (as usual) is private so seek permission first. At the bottom of the lane, there is a small barn on the left just before another gate, and another further uphill past that gate (Marked on the map as a "Billinger Barn" Opposite is a length of broken fence. Carefully climb over the fence and descend down to the stream. It can be slippy when wet. Once in the bottom walk upstream to view the several small falls.

Near the small hamlet of Stone House in Dentdale, towers the impressive viaduct of Arten Gill. Through the centre of the arches tumbles the gill itself.

Small Steps

Starting in small steps it then powers over 2 steep drops before heading down to meet the river Dee. 

Park in the layby at the side of the narrow Stone House Bridge. Take the track uphill for a distance of 500m (approx) until you reach the viaduct. Access to the falls is difficult as it is very steep. About half way up the track there is a gate on the right, into a field from which the bottom of the falls can be reached - WITH CARE! 

The land is private so ask permission beforehand!

Stainforth Force

Situated a few miles North of Settle, and a steady walk from the car park in Stainforth will take you to these delightful falls with a large plunge pool. 

Leave the car park (use the same car park for Catrigg Force) by the bottom corner and go through the subway under the road. 

Turn right once you leave the subway and walk uphill. 

Turn left over the railway lines then right, walk up the track until you come to Dog Brow Hill. 

Turn left here and follow the road back down hill. 

Cross the the bridge and go immediately through the hole in the wall. 

The falls are in front of you.

Scalber Force

2 Km to the East of Settle, is the stunning falls of Scaleber Force. Although it's just at the road side, but this can be tricky to reach. The "steps" down are steep and can be slippy in the wet.
