Mill Gill Force

Mill Gill Force

The route to Mill Gill takes you through the village of Askrigg, over meadow and up through woodland.
Park in the small car park on the way into Askrigg from Carperby or by the Church. (Also worth a visit!)
There are honesty boxes for donations which help pay for the upkeep of the area.
Follow the main street until you get to the St Oswald's church then turn down Mill Lane. Follow this lane until you reach a gate on the right leading through the buttercup meadow.
At the far end go through the stile and under the trough. Cross the bridge and turn right into the woodland.
Continue up until you reach a sign post "Mill Gill Fall only" and descend down to the falls.

Taking a left at the sign post will take you on to the Upper falls and Whitfield Gill Force, (which is covered in another blog post).

Finger Post to Mill Gill only.

UPPER MILL GILL FALLS

For the "Upper" Falls, walk back up to the "Fingerpost" and head towards Whitfield Gill. Follow the track upstream until you come to another finger post " Askrigg Via Low Straits" Turn right here and walk down to the falls. There is a small bridge over the Stream.

Disher Force

Disher Force

Just off the road from Carperby to Askrigg you will find Disher Force. Park at Woodhall, opposite the Garage/Petrol Station and take the track between the last barn on the right, where the post box is. Here, follow the track through the gate, as it snakes uphill away from the hamlet for 1/4 mile. When you reach the top you will find a sign post, follow the path to the right marked "Carperby 2 ml, Bolton Castle 4 1/4 ml", and after 230 m you will come to the top of the falls. It is a bit of a scramble down to the base of the falls but can be done with care (especially when wet) Turn left above the falls and follow the stream uphill and you will find some more delightful smaller falls.
Follow the Sign!

This way to the falls

And further Upstream!

Cat Leap

Cat Leap

Just outside Askrigg is another small, easy to reach waterfall. Coming from Carperby towards Askrigg, as you drop downhill, take the left hand turn to Worton (Sign posted Worton 3/4) continue down this narrow lane (Low Gate) for approx 400m and take the first left hand turn into Thwaite Holme Lane. Continue to the end passing over a small bridge, Park at the remains of the old railway line. Walk back toward the small bridge. You then have an option depending on which side of the falls you prefer (Unless you want to "Paddle!") Go through the gate(s) either side of the bridge and follow the stream for 300m (approx) until you reach the falls. This is private land, so ask permission!
Location

When I first arrived I was met with (what I thought was) a dry stream bed!
View back to the bridge
A pleasant surprise!
